First of all I would like to say that I was so happy to write about how has my idea of professionalism changed in first year ?
The meaning of professionalism in my mind when I entered this college was general and not specific . I used to believe that being professional mean to do all your home works one by one , to attend all of my lectures , to study always , and respect the the time . Williams and Hopps have another meaning of professionalism . They thought that professionalism is to make your believes according to several facts . This facts should support your believes strongly. .Professionals always face challenges from the public because of their believes ,so their beliefs should be solid . Information that is supported with statistics are very important to the professionals because it is important for their life . William and Hopps can play a good role for helping me as I am developing into professionalism . They can give me more explanation about how to support my believes with facts , from which resources I have to get the facts , and how can I connect between the facts and my believes .
I disagree with the thesis which said that professionalism is learned . I think that professionalism is a behavior which we learn it from our experiences in the life . For example , it is impossible to learn how to deal with the public theoretically . In fact you have to deal with people always in order to know what is the good way to deal with them or how to deal with them . In the video “The making of a Doctor “the students of Harvard University learn how to deal with patients , but they did not know how does it like to deal with the patients for the first time until they did their training . Also , professionalism is to make your believes according to the facts and support it with information and statistics . It will be easy to learn how to connect between your beliefs and the information or the facts , but it will be so difficult to learn all the information or facts that you need . Because even we get our knowledge from learning , the most of information we have come from our experience in the life . Also , Dr. Nora who came to give us a lecture about cancer said that she had have more knowledge about cancer after she suffered from cancer for three times . She said also her experience with cancer helped her to know how does patients with cancer feel like .
I agree with thesis that stated students must take part in activities that allow them experiment with and use professional behaviors . Because professional is a behavior and our behaviors’ change according to our experiments in the life , the participation in different activities play an important role as we developing into professionalism . From the video “ The making of a Doctor “ the students started to understand the real meaning of professional behaviors when they started their activities in the hospital . They face some questions from their patients and they have to answer this questions . They , as professionals , should answer these question with information that they know and they have to support it with facts and statistics . These activities in the hospital and the experience with the patient helped the students from Harvard University to know what professionalism mean exactly .
After the course of Orientation to medicine most of first year students change their knowledge , expectations , and behaviors . For me , my knowledge changed after introduction to medicine . Before the course , my knowledge about doctors , patients , and the work in the hospital was limited and depend on what I hear or I see in the Television . Introduction to medicine make me more aware about how does it like to be a doctor , most affected diseases in Oman , the most important issues related to the health in Oman , and the definition of health according to WHO. The gusts speakers who came to give us lectures along the course were professionals , so we got useful information from them . Also , the videos , and the reading articles was so useful for us as a medical students .
After the course of Orientation to Medicine the meaning of professionalism has been changed in my mind. Now, I know that professionalism is to be specific in my life. To be specific is to know what you do exactly . For example , if you want to change your life style . It is not specific to say that I will change every thing in my life . It is specific to say that I will change the types of foods I eat , the number of hours I sleep a day , my look , the style of clothes I wear . As well as I have to be specific when I review my ideas , being professional mean to support my ideas with facts . For example , if I want to speak about the evidence of AIDS in Oman . It is not professional to said AIDS occur in Oman only . I have to support the above sentence by giving real numbers or percentages which identified exactly the number of people who suffer from AIDS in Oman . Professionalism means also to respect the time . Professional person must respect the time . Professional person always manage his / her time . Because time management helps us to finish our work in the time . At last but not least , Orientation to Medicine give me a new meaning for my life
